Meet Samantha
Samantha Vang is a lifelong Minnesota native, a proud daughter of refugees, a Democrat, and a longtime Brooklyn Center resident.
She was elected in 2018 to become the first of the two Hmong women to serve in the Minnesota House of Representatives. Currently she is Chair o the Agriculture Finance and Policy committee. She co-founded the first ever legislative Minnesota Asian Pacific (MAP) caucus and became chair of the People of Color Indigenous (POCI) caucus. She was selected to be Speaker Pro-Tempore in 2021 and continues to step into leadership roles at the Minnesota DFL House.
Samantha Vang was elected in 2018, becoming one of the first Hmong American women in the Minnesota House.
As a legislator Samantha passed critical legislation on addressing a broad variety of issues facing Minnesotans. Her priorities center on providing tax relief for everyday Minnesotans, addressing the mental health workforce shortage, improving public safety, tackling climate change and spurring economic development. In 2021, Samantha was awarded a Legislator of Distinction by the League of Minnesota Cities.
Before running for office, Samantha worked as a community organizer. In that role, she ran both partisan and nonpartisan campaigns. Her greatest feat was building an Asian American Pacific Islander coalition focused on civic engagement shining a light on Minnesota Asian Americans in mainstream politics. Through this coalition she helped over 6,600 Asian Americans vote, often for the very first time.
Samantha is a first-generation college graduate from Gustavus Adolphus College with a B.A in Political Science and Communications. She currently works as a Tenant Advocate educating renters on their rights. On her free time, she enjoys spending time with her family. As an advocate and leader, Samantha will continue to keep communities and families thriving.
